Initially, it was the look of him back on that fall day in 1985.  We remained friends through graduation from high school.  I saw him often when I’d return home from college to visit my family.   I drove vehicles that required quite a bit of maintenance and would frequently see him at the auto parts store where he worked.  He always seemed friendly and had a great sense of humor.

Over the years, I also appreciated his tendency to help people, including me, with projects.  As we began dating, I felt heard, wanted, understood.   He took time for me, even when we were working and going to school many hours each week.  I felt like I was the most important person to him.  He allowed me to feel safe and sheltered.  He allowed me to love him in return.  He stood up for me when he felt I was threatened (a misunderstanding with his mom) and was there for me when I thought I was in crisis.  He dropped everything to come to my aid when I called.  In those days, I don’t remember a single moment I couldn’t see a great future with him.
